The physical side of performing Martial Arts training is indeed a very difficult task to accomplish. We can feel that mentally we can accomplish the task. We can feel that we have the heart/spirit to accomplish the task. The physical part, the actual doing of the necessary movements, punching, kicking, blocking, all the conditioning necessary to achieve can be the most difficult part. Physically to accomplish the movements is a very rewarding part of training in the Arts because I do believe that the true "bottom line" is the actual performance of the necessary techniques to ward off an attacker coming at me. I do not wish to engage in a confrontation, nor do I teach people to go in this direction. I do believe that it is crucial to train to have the physical skills necessary so that I never truly have to use these skills. You might say, then why learn how to do this? The simplest answer I can give is the concept that it is necessary to be aware of ourselves in such a way that we are prepared to protect ourselves first from harm and as well, those that we love and cherish. It makes me feel good to know that I have worked my body to achieve a physical presence that may make a person think twice before attacking. While that person is contemplating an apparent assault, it gives me an advantage based on having prepared the body to take a punch, kick, or strike through rigorous training. The deeper side of this issue goes into the fact that a quiet confidence comes over me, and that in relating this to everyday life, it gives me the courage to deal with life's situations in a similar manner as if in an actual fighting position. Sticking up for myself when someone else is not treating me fairly. We know that this can range from a family member to our employers, the corner store attendant or another driver on the road. To dispel the situation without violence is the greatest achievement. To have patience when someone else flies off the handle and gets in your face and you know in your mind and heart that physically, they have met a match. Not being a quitter because you are prepared for the "bottom line". The bottom line in most cases means the confrontation has gone beyond words and physical action is a must. Just knowing that I have hardened the mind, body, and soul by going through the rigors of intense training is a beautiful feeling. I truly believe it is necessary for a person to partake in Martial Arts due to the difficulties in our society today. People need more physical awareness... Too many people will not let you peacefully walk away any more. Mentally and physically standing up for our rights is a very difficult thing to do in society right now. Another great part of this is that I know of no other activity that brings about better health. Many accomplishments are achieved through this form of study. All are wonderful for the health minded person. Finally, the physical side of harmony believe it or not is FUN. There is something there for the most physically fit or those who only think of physical and don't do the physical. Next issue: The Spiritual Side of Harmony....Stay Tuned. Billy
